How a Siena Duomo Visit Works

Choose the ticket by how much of the complex you want, dress for a church, mind Sunday mornings, and arrive before the queue.

  1. Pick the Ticket

The cathedral ticket covers the church, its floor and the Piccolomini Library. The OPA SI PASS adds the Baptistery, Crypt, museum and Facciatone viewpoint. Only the Porta del Cielo ticket takes you onto the roof.

  2. Dress for a Church

Siena Cathedral is a working church: cover your shoulders and knees. The walking tour listing turns away short skirts and sleeveless tops, and the old town's streets are steep and paved, so wear walking shoes.

  3. Mind Sunday Mornings

Masses take priority. From 1 November the cathedral opens to visitors at 10:30 on weekdays; on Sundays and holidays at 10:00 until 15 November and only at 13:30 from 16 November, and services can change the hours without notice.

  4. Go Early or Skip the Line

The ticket office at Piazza Duomo 7 sells on the day, but the line in season is long. A skip-the-line ticket or a guided entry gets you in without it; the last entry is 30 minutes before closing.

The Guide

Which Siena Duomo Ticket to Buy, and When to Go

Three tickets open the complex. The right one depends on whether you want the rooftops, the museum, or a guide.

The official seller of Siena Duomo tickets is the Opera della Metropolitana, the cathedral’s works office, and it sells three: the cathedral with its Piccolomini Library (€10 until 15 November 2026, then €7), the OPA SI PASS to every site of the complex (€16, then €14), and the Porta del Cielo rooftop ticket (€21). Those are the prices on operaduomo.siena.it, checked in October 2026. To see the Duomo with a guide, the most-reviewed guided tour on GetYourGuide is Tuscan Escapes by Papilio’s Walking Tour and Skip-the-Line Duomo Tickets: two hours through the old town with an English-speaking local guide, ending inside the cathedral. It is from US$45 a person (checked October 2026) and rated 4.8 out of 5 from 1,436 reviews.

Part of the inlaid marble floor of Siena Cathedral: pale figures on dark and red marble, roped off for visitors
Part of the inlaid marble floor, uncovered in 2026 until 15 November. Photo: the walking tour listing on GetYourGuide.

The walk starts in the old town rather than at the cathedral door. The guide covers Piazza del Campo and the Palio, the contrade, the Basilica of San Domenico and the palaces of the city’s bankers, then takes you into the Duomo for the works by Donatello, Michelangelo and Bernini. Guests this October name their guides, Julia and Claudia among them, and describe a walk full of Siena’s traditions as much as its art. Free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before.

Which ticket you need

TicketPrice at the Opera (October 2026)What it opens
Cathedral€10 until 15 November 2026; €7 from 16 November to 31 DecemberThe cathedral, its marble floor and the Piccolomini Library
OPA SI PASS€16 until 15 November; €14 from 16 November; ages 7 to 11 €3The cathedral and library, Baptistery, Crypt, Museo dell’Opera, Facciatone viewpoint and Oratory of San Bernardino, over three days
Porta del Cielo€21; ages 7 to 11 €6; sold from 1 March to 6 JanuaryThe rooftop route above the vaults, plus every museum site

Children up to six go free on all three, as do residents of Siena (except on the rooftop route). The OPA SI PASS also comes with a free audio guide on your phone. On GetYourGuide the same pass is sold as the Cathedral Complex Pass with Audio Guide (OPA SI PASS), from US$22 with the booking fee included and free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and GetYourGuide marks it as an official ticket. The ticket prices guide sets out every price and who enters free.

The floor is uncovered until 15 November 2026

For most of the year the cathedral’s inlaid marble floor, 56 scenes in marble made by Sienese artists over several centuries, is protected under boards. In 2026 it has been uncovered for the Year of St Francis, from 27 June to 31 July and again from 18 August to 15 November. That is why the cathedral ticket costs €10 and the pass €16 until then; from 16 November the floor is covered again and the prices drop. During the uncovering the Masses move to the church of the Santissima Annunziata, in the Santa Maria della Scala complex across the square. The floor guide covers what to look for.

Queue at the door or book ahead

You can buy on the day at the ticket office at Piazza Duomo 7 or at the Dear Guests visitor centre at Via di Città 48, near Piazza del Campo, and the Opera also sells online and by phone. The catch is the line. A guest who used the pass this August found “a huge line” and walked past it; another, on a hot day, advised going early in the morning. The Porta del Cielo has limited places and is sold only online or at the ticket office while places last, so book it ahead. The one tour that pairs it with an early opening is DEAR GUESTS’ 7:15 morning visit with the Clavigero, the keeper of the cathedral keys; the Porta del Cielo guide explains it.

Opening hours and what to wear

Until 31 October 2026 the cathedral is open from 10:00 to 19:00, and while the floor is uncovered it opens at 9:30 on Sundays and holidays. From 1 November to 24 December it opens from 10:30 to 17:30; on Sundays and holidays it opens at 10:00 until 15 November and only at 13:30 from 16 November, and on 1 December, the feast of the city’s patron saint, it closes at 15:00. The last entry is 30 minutes before closing, and services can change the hours. It is a working church, so cover your shoulders and knees; jeans are fine. The opening hours guide has the full timetable and the Mass times.

Where everything is

Map of central Siena marking the Duomo, the Museo dell'Opera and Facciatone, the Baptistery, Santa Maria della Scala, the Palazzo delle Papesse, Piazza del Campo, San Domenico and the Piazza Gramsci bus stop
The cathedral complex on its hill, with Piazza del Campo below it and the Piazza Gramsci bus stop to the north.

The complex is spread around Piazza del Duomo. The Baptistery sits below the cathedral’s apse, down a flight of steps; the Museo dell’Opera and the Facciatone, the wall of an enlargement begun in 1339 and never finished, are on the right of the facade; Santa Maria della Scala, the old hospital, faces it. Piazza del Campo is a five-minute walk downhill.

Coming from Florence

Siena is about an hour and a quarter from Florence by the fast bus, which stops at Piazza Gramsci, a short walk from the centre; the train takes longer and the station is about two kilometres below the old town. Check the timetables before you go. The coach day trips make it simpler: Gray Line’s San Gimignano, Siena and Chianti tour includes a guided walk in Siena and, as an option, the cathedral; the day trip page compares four of them.
