"Everything was great.... Aaron, our guide, was exceptional. He has a wonderful accent when he speaks Spanish, and he speaks very good English, Portuguese, etc... He has a very rich general knowledge, and we learned new things at every turn. The driver, Silvio, was very professional. We felt safe at all times. As for the route itself, it was very well planned; somehow, you never had time to get bored on the bus."

The Guide
Which Day Trip, and How Much Siena You Get
The tours differ in two things: how long you have in Siena, and whether you go inside the cathedral.
The Siena day trip most people book from Florence is a coach tour that pairs Siena with San Gimignano and a Chianti lunch, and the most reviewed of them is Gray Line’s San Gimignano, Siena, Chianti Wine Tasting and Lunch: eleven hours with a guided walk in Siena and the cathedral as an option. It is sold as Florence: S. Gimignano, Siena, Chianti Wine Tasting & Lunch, from US$80 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.6 out of 5 from 4,315 reviews, the most of any Siena day trip from Florence on this page.

What the day is like
The coach leaves Piazzale Montelungo in Florence and reaches San Gimignano in about 70 minutes, with two hours there. Lunch is at a winery in the Chianti hills, with a guided tasting of three wines and three courses ending with cantucci. Siena comes last, with about two hours and twenty minutes for a guided walk through the centre and Piazza del Campo; if you choose that option, the guide also takes you into the cathedral and the Piccolomini Library with skip-the-line entry. From November to March the stop at Monteriggioni is dropped and you are back in Florence about half an hour earlier.
This is a big-coach day. A guest this October counted 80 people in the group and called the lunch average, another found the bus seats tight, and most of the October reviews praise the guides and drivers by name. If you want the cathedral, choose the option that includes it when you book.
Four day trips compared
Three towns for the lowest price. Ciaoflorence’s Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano tour is the cheapest, from US$41, but gives about an hour of free time in Siena; the local guide there and the Tuscan lunch are options.
More time in two towns. City Wonders’ Siena and San Gimignano day trip gives about 1 hour 50 minutes in Siena and two hours in San Gimignano, from US$55. Entrance fees are not included, so you would buy a cathedral ticket yourself.
The cathedral ticket in the price. Tramvia’s San Gimignano and Siena Tasting Experience includes a wine tasting with a light lunch in San Gimignano and a skip-the-line ticket for Siena Cathedral, with about two and a half hours in Siena, from US$112.

Going on your own
Siena is easy to reach without a tour. The fast bus from Florence takes about an hour and a quarter and stops at Piazza Gramsci, a short walk from the centre; the slower buses take longer. The train takes about an hour and a half and arrives at a station about two kilometres below the old town, so plan a bus or taxi up the hill. Check the timetables on the day. With four hours in Siena you can see the cathedral and the library, walk down to Piazza del Campo and have lunch; with the OPA SI PASS and a full day you can add the museum, the Facciatone and the Baptistery. The Siena Duomo tickets page explains which ticket to buy.

What Day Trip Guests Say
"Martha and Louisa were excellent as was the driver Camarino"
"The main course for lunch could be improved: mac and cheese was offered, but the grated cheese was not provided. In addition, the region has a wide variety of options that could have been served as the main course. In short, the appetizer and the wines were great, but the main course left something to be desired."
"Fabi, the live guide, was great. I recommend this day trip to everyone."
"The guide spoke Spanish but very fast. Huge group of 80 people. Average lunch."
"Ricardo, Silvio, and Stella were a fantastic trio in the shared experience. Disciplined, organized, and very friendly, they accompanied us on a sightseeing tour that I truly recommend."
"Really good tour. It's worth it. Guided tour with a somewhat confusing audio guide. The food served during the tasting left something to be desired."
"Great experience, loved Sam Gimmignano! The bus seats were too tight and close for comfort."

Siena Day Trip FAQ
The questions people ask before a day trip to Siena from Florence.
Yes: the cathedral, the Piccolomini Library and Piazza del Campo fit comfortably into a day, and Siena is about an hour and a quarter away by the fast bus. Gray Line's San Gimignano, Siena and Chianti tour adds two towns and a winery lunch.
About an hour and a quarter by the fast bus to Piazza Gramsci, and about an hour and a half by train to a station two kilometres below the old town. The coach tours take 70 to 90 minutes; check the timetables if you travel alone. The City Wonders day trip goes straight to Siena first.
The bus, for most visitors: it is faster and stops at Piazza Gramsci, a short walk from the centre, while the train station is two kilometres below the old town. Or let a coach tour such as the Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano day trip do the driving.
Yes for the cathedral, the library and Piazza del Campo with lunch; not for the whole OPA SI PASS route plus the town. The Tramvia tasting day gives about two and a half hours in Siena with the cathedral ticket included.
Some do: Tramvia's tasting day includes a skip-the-line cathedral ticket, and Gray Line's tour includes it as an option; City Wonders leaves entrance fees out. Choose the option with the cathedral when you book the Gray Line tour.
Yes, on a tour: they are about 40 minutes apart by coach, and every day trip here combines them. The City Wonders day trip gives the most time to the two towns alone.
